DIY Kenya
bloc has commissioned product designer Peter Hathaway (http://www.hathawaydesign.co.uk/) to instigate a participatory design project with the students of the Kwale Homeopathic College and Health Center (http://www.4kenia.nl/). Peter will be collaborating with the students at the Kwale Center whilst developing an innovative project during a three week period prior to attending Maker Faire Africa (http://www.makerfaireafrica.com/).

DIY Kenya Commission

The DIY Kenya commission is a new residency opportunity developed by bloc for technologists, creatives and collectives based in Wales to travel to rural Kenya. The aim of the residency is to develop innovative ideas, products, events, interventions or artworks in response to everyday African concerns.
What: A commission for a creative practitioner/s (2 people max) from Wales to be in residence in rural Kenya and develop an innovative project during a three-week period.
When: 18 July- 10 August, 2010
Where: Phase 1: 20 July – 3 August. Practitioners will be based at the Kwale Homeopathic College and Health Center - www.4kenia.nl
Phase 2: 4-10 August. Practitioners will be based in Nairobi and participating at Maker Faire Africa 2010 - www.makerfaireafrica.com
Please note that we are not currently able to offer the successful applicant a fee. However, all travel, accommodation and medical costs will be covered, along with a small materials budget. We will also provide comprehensive support during the duration of the residency.

The next phase of the northern bloc project will be launched at Technium CAST, Bangor on 30 March. The event comprises: an interactive installation; a virtual balloon race; an actual balloon release plus the chance to find out about northern bloc’s programme of workshops, clinics and commissions. bloc is seeking applications for a northern bloc coordinator post for a Practitioner (Artist/Creative Technologist). The post lasts for a period of 9 months, starting at the beginning of January 2010. The post-holder will be an artist/creative technologist applying their knowledge and understanding as a practitioner to generate new opportunities for practitioners in the form of clinics, workshops and commissions across North Wales.

bloc is seeking applications for a Programme Development post for a Practitioner (Artist/Creative Technologist). The post lasts for a period of 10 months, starting October 2009. The post holder will promote technology across all artforms in Wales and lead on the development of three commissioning projects for bloc’s programme of work in 2010 and 2011 as well as participate in bloc’s current programme of work.
The post-holder will be an artist/creative technologist applying their knowledge and understanding as a practitioner to generate new opportunities for practitioners in the form of commissions.
Salary: £8,000 on a freelance basis

SPLICE (Social Practices, Learning and Interoperability in Connected Environments)
SPLICE is an 18-month project which seeks to actively engage practitioners from the Creative Technology sector and education, in order to assess and promote the business potential of social networking. The project is led by the University of Bolton and supported through JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee). Improving Bloc`s Online Provision
