`The Young and Evil` Curated by Stuart Comer

`The Young and Evil` on www.tank.tv
Curated by Stuart Comer
14th July 2008 - 21st September 2008

The second part of this exhibition will be screened at Tate Modern on the 20th September 2008, 19.00.

Curated by Stuart Comer `The Young and Evil` is the next installment in our series of guest curated exhibitions.

The digital glow of the internet has largely replaced the dark space of the cinema as the site where furtive desires are first expressed and encountered on flickering screens. Consequently, the web continues to evolve into an uncanny hybrid of personal longing and collective interaction where configurations of watching and being watched take on radically new form. Reconsidering the historical contours and shifting relationships of sex and community in the digital age, a range of artists has been invited to select two works: one contemporary video shown to be shown online, and one historical film to be screened in the cinema. Selectors include Andrea Geyer, William E Jones, Carlos Motta, Emily Roysdon, Akram Zaatari.

The programme derives its title from `The Young and Evil`, a scandalous exposé of subcultures in Greenwich Village written by Charles Henri Ford and Parker Tyler in 1932. It was banned in the United States and England and was published by the Obelisk Press in Paris in 1933.

Including:
Selected by Stuart Comer: William E. Jones, `Mansfield 1962`, 2006.
Selected by William E. Jones: Naotaka Hiro, `Piss Watch (One to Twelve)`, 2006.
Selected by Carlos Motta: Tara Mateik, `Operation Invert`, 2003.
Selected by Akram Zaatari: Ali Cherri, `You`, 2008.
Selected by Emily Roysdon: Wu Ingrid Tsang, `The Shape of a Right Statement I`, 2008.
Selected by Andrea Geyer: Emily Roysdon, `POW`, 2005.
Selected by Daria Martin. Siobhan O`Brien, `Physical Education` 2008.
Selected by Karol Radziszewski. Mark Raidpere, `Andrey/Andris`, 2006.
Selected by Bruce Yonemoto. David Burns, `ASSWAX`, 2004.

Please note that this show contains explicit content.

The second part of this exhibition will be screened at Tate Modern on the 20th September 2008, 19.00.
Masaki Fujihata: The Conquest of Imperfection Exhibition

Masaki Fujihata, The Conquest of Imperfection

The Conquest of Imperfection is the first UK exhibition of Japanese media artist Masaki Fujihata’s acclaimed interactive work, featuring six installations created by the artist between 1996 – 2006. All the works in the exhibition are characterised by a sense of playfulness, requiring visitors to actively engage with them, but at the same time they probe fundamental questions of human perception and awareness. Unreflective Mirror for example, forces us to question our own sense of identity, when we look into a mirror only to find our reflection isn’t present. Fujihata questions what reality is, and how we understand it in relation to the virtual realm. While his work exhibits an intrinsically Japanese aesthetic, Fujihata also addresses the core issues occupying media artists across the world. He has created pioneering work in all fields of digital media, including computer graphics, interactivity, the Internet, location based and distributed computing, nano technology, data mining, inhabited information spaces, and GPS.
This exhibition features a selection of works from The Conquest of Imperfection, originally shown at the Center for Contemporary Graphic Art and Tyler Graphics Archives Collection, Tokyo, 2006.
The Conquest of Imperfection is supported by The Daiwa Anglo Japanese Society, The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, The Japan Foundation and Palace Hotel - Principal Hayley Hotels %26 Conference Venues.
